Finding Your Personal Switchwords
Unique words for you
Personal Switchwords are the power-words that work just for you. They may be words with a family connection, lyrics from a song or favourite words that for some reason just feel right. These are not the ‘catchphrases’ we absorb socially that drift in and out of fashion (remember ‘game on’?), but words that act as a direct, personal link to a positive feeling or memory. Jackie loves the word ‘scenery’ because it reminds her of the wonderful views in the North Yorkshire Dales; it gives her a feeling of freshness and perspective. Jayne loves ‘rose’ because she connects it with opportunities coming her way – like a rose opening up. Yasia loves ‘bumblebee’ because her daughter’s middle name is Bee.
Other favourites arise because there’s a quality about the word itself that attracts us, such as the rhythm or vowel sound – feel the pulse when you say ‘pumpernickel’, the sigh when you say ‘moon’ or the way your tongue moves with ‘sglodion’, Tracey’s beloved Welsh word for chips.
Whichever words attract you, take note. You can dedicate them as Switchwords and combine them to create powerful phrases. For example, Jayne’s is TOGETHER-ROSE-BE-DONE-NOW (‘make me one in my purpose, bring abundance right away’).
Three techniques to find your personal Switchwords
The techniques below will help you detect your personal Switchwords, from looking around your home for clues to a short meditation to allow you to sense the words that work for you.
1. Detect your favourite words
A London literature festival asked people to vote for their favourite English word. From the 15,000 people who responded came this top 10:
1 Serendipity
2 Quidditch
3 Love
4 Peace/Why
5 Onomatopoeia (a word that describes the sound it makes, such as ‘bang’)
6 Hope
7 Faith
8 Football/Muggle/Hello/Family
9 Compassion/Home
10 Jesus/Money
Which are your favourite words? The words you love may be more obvious than you think. Note the artwork you have around you and words they include, look at greetings cards you keep forever, wall art (the words LOVE and PEACE in sculpted letters are popular), even tattoos. Write down your favourites, then use the finger-muscle test here to test their strength for you as new personal Switchwords.
2. Ask for your Switchwords with visualisation
This visualisation is a gentle way to allow subconscious images to arise. The names of these images, colours or shapes can become your personal Switchwords. To prepare, find a quiet space in which to sit comfortably, and have a pen and paper at the ready.
1 Sit quietly for a moment. Take a deep breath, and breathe out. Imagine you are following the path of your breath through your body with your mind’s eye. Feel your body softening as you relax. Close your eyes.
2 Chant the master Switchword TOGETHER 10 times. Sit in silence for a few moments.
3 Visualise a screen floating before you, right in your line of sight. It is white and glowing. Ask, ‘What do I need?’
4 Sense any colours, objects or impressions that emerge on the screen and be aware of any word that snaps into your mind. Write down this word.
5 Close your eyes again, take a deep breath in and out, then focus on this word.
